This is my fifth Dell and no one at Dell cares now. Why should anyone trust Dell anymore? When I bought my first Dell in 1988 was I quite happy. Seven months now with this problem and no one cares.

See the comment below that was posted to the HP Forum today about a similar problem. SO, how can two quite similarly configured XP machines (Dell Inspirion 75) have such different behavior when printing to a LaserJet 5 on a network? I have NEVER enabled printer sharing on the Inspirion 8600 to maintain its security. I have no idea why I shared this network printer on the Inspiron 7500 - I removed the sharing but the printer test page still has these three lines. The Dell 8600 has EXACTLY the same entries, except for the three lines: Share Name, Location, Comment. The Inspiron 7500 with Windows XP DOES work fine with the LaserJet 5 and its test page says this:Ĭomputer name: Dell650 (The Inspiron 7500 is a 650 MHz machine) Printer Model: HP LaserJet 5/5M - Standardĭata format: RAW (EMF doesn't seem to matter) The Windows 98 Printer Test page says this (I hope I type all this correctly):

I have installed the latest drivers for the LaserJet 5 on the Win 98 printer server box. So I often transfer the files over the network and then print them from the other machine - this is a pain. Why do vendors just point the finger at each other and make the customer suffer?ĭoes anyone have a clue what else to check? I don't understand why I can transfer files over the network, but cannot print. I have connected the 8600 directly to the Linksys router instead of using the wireless connection. Over three hours of talking to Microsoft technical support has revealed no problem. Could there be a bug in the HP LaserJet 5 driver?ĭell blames Linksys. I've re-installed the drivers perhaps half a dozen times. I have blown away all printer drivers on both the Inspirion 8600 and the Win 98 box hosting the LaserJet 5. Dell replaced the motherboard (they wouldn't listen that this is a driver/network issue).

ONLY the Dell Inspirion 8600 has this problem - with either a wired or wireless network connection.ĭell had me update the BIOS.

Other PCs on the same network (including a Dell Inspirion 7500 with XP and a wireless connection) have no problem and all can print quickly and reliably. Printing a single test page often takes 5 or 10 minutes or more, if it prints at all.

Transferring files from the 8600 to the PC hosting the printer works fine, just printing does not. The 8600 can print reliably connected directly to the LaserJet 5, but printing via a Win 98 box connected to the LaserJet doesn't work reliably. My new Inspirion 8600 with XP Professional cannot print reliably to a LaserJet 5 via a home network.
